"Vintage Altered Canvas" Guest Inspiration by Chaitali Dekhtawala

Hello Crafty Friends,

This is Chaitali. Delighted to be the Guest Designer for this month. This is my second guest designer project with Prika. Today I bring a reverse jute canvas 6" X 6" to share with you all.

Since the theme of this month's blog challenge is Monochrome, the colour I've selected is Brown and tones & shades of Brown. To complement this colour palette, I have decided to create a vintage look.

So, here is the supply list and the steps to create this vintage altered canvas layout.

Supply list:
  • Clear Gesso by Finnabair
  • "Gold Champagne" Gelatos by Faber Castell
  • Texture Paste "Opaque Matte" by Ranger
  • Stencil "Flourish" by Tim Holtz
  • "Flourish Set 15" chip board by Creative Embellishments
  • Patina Effect Paste "Brass" by Finnabair
  • Embossing powder "Copper" by Recollections
  • Distress Ink colors “Ground Expresso” and “Walnut Stain” by Tim Holtz
  • Art Alchemy Wax “White Gold” by Finnabair

Step.1: I started by using the reverse side of the jute canvas. I first applied the clear Gesso by Finnabair to the canvas to prep it.

Step.2: Next, I mixed Faber Castell Gelatos "Gold Champagne" with Ranger's Texture Paste "Opaque Matte" to get the colour texture paste. Applied that paste on two sides of the canvas using the lovely stencil "Flourish" by Tim Holtz. Also, distressed the edges of a square pattern paper and glued it on the inner square area of the canvas.

Step.3: Then, took the beautiful "Flourish Set 15" chip board by Creative Embellishments. Coloured one with Finnabair Patina Effect Paste "Brass" and for the other used embossing powder "Copper" by Recollections.

Step.4: Later, added one more layer of pattern paper to the centre of the canvas.

Step.5: Further, added the round crochet lace doily to the bottom left corner of the canvas and folded it slightly inside.

Step.6: Then, started with my main focal photo by placing it on top of the crochet lace doily. I chose a vintage pic of a pretty girl to go with my selected monochromatic color scheme. I started distressing the edges using Tim Holtz distress ink and layering different types of paper in various shades of Brown to elevate the focal point of the canvas. Further, decorated it with flowers and chip boards around the focal picture.

Step.7: Continued adding more flowers and added lace to the right side of the canvas.

Step.8: Further added lace leaves, metal frame highlighted with Finnabair wax, mini glass bottle, diamonds, beads and glitter to enhance the vintage look of the canvas. I always like sending across a message through my artworks, so here too added two lovely quotes celebrating womanhood as Woman’s day is around the corner.

Step.9: Finally, to add more interest, attached a small hanging trinket to the bottom edge of the canvas. For making the trinket used thread, a bottle cap filled with flowers & beads, and a tiny brown owl.

So, here is the final look of the finished altered canvas.

I hope you like my creation and it inspires you in some way to make your own beautiful monochromatic artwork.

Happy crafting!
